COLL Tutorial

Solve last-layer corners in one look when edges are already oriented — 40 algorithms, one EPLL finish.

What Is COLL

COLL stands for Corners of Last Layer. It is a set of 40 algorithms that orient AND permute the last-layer corners in a single look — but only when the edges are already oriented. Think of it as the 7 familiar OLL shapes (H, Pi, U, T, Sune, Antisune, L), each split into corner-permutation variants: OLL only orients corners, COLL solves them completely. Because edge orientation is preserved, whatever remains afterward is always an edge-only PLL.

COLL is the CFOP solver's reward for an EO skip: when F2L finishes with all four top edges oriented (about 1 in 8 solves), COLL turns the last layer into two fast looks instead of OLL + PLL.

COLL vs OLL+PLL

COLL only applies when all four last-layer edges are already oriented — statistically about 1 in 8 solves. The other 7 out of 8 times, you just do your normal OLL and PLL as usual; COLL doesn't replace anything, it only upgrades the lucky cases. So what's the payoff? In those 1-in-8 solves, you trade OLL + PLL (two looks, often 20+ moves with a full PLL) for COLL + EPLL (two looks, but the second look is always a short, fast edge-only perm).

Realistically, full COLL saves roughly 0.5–1 second on the solves where it applies — modest per solve, but it also removes every G-perm and other slow PLLs from those solves entirely, which makes your times more consistent.

COLL vs CMLL

If the 7-shape structure sounds familiar, it should: COLL and CMLL describe the same 42 corner states. The difference is what happens to the edges. CMLL (Roux) is allowed to scramble edge orientation — many CMLL algs flip edges freely. COLL algs are chosen specifically to preserve edge orientation, because in CFOP those oriented edges are the whole point.

The practical upside: if you already know CMLL, COLL recognition transfers almost 1:1 — same shapes, same corner patterns to spot. You only need to learn the EO-safe algorithm for each case, and many are close cousins of the CMLL versions you already know.

Recognition

COLL recognition works exactly like CMLL: first identify the OLL shape from the U-face colors (H, Pi, U, T, Sune, Antisune, L), then determine the corner permutation within that shape by checking the side stickers. Each shape has 4–8 permutation variants — in the H shape, for example, the two opposite side-color pairs tell you which H case you're looking at.

The skill is two-layered and fast: shape first (instant — you already know OLL shapes), then permutation (one glance at two adjacent sides). Drill shape→perm as a single recognition habit and COLL identification becomes as quick as naming an OLL.

Learning Order

Don't learn COLL in numerical order — learn by shape, easiest and most common first. Start with H and Pi: their algs are short, recognition is obvious, and they show up often. Then U and T, then L. Leave Sune and Antisune for last — or skip them entirely at first, because plain OLL + PLL on those two shapes is already fast and the COLL versions save the least.

Within each shape, learn the fully-permuted-corners case first (usually the shortest alg), then the adjacent-swap and diagonal-swap variants. One shape per week is a comfortable pace — full COLL in under two months without burnout.

The EPLL Finish

Here's the payoff for preserving edge orientation: after any COLL, the only thing left is an EPLL — a U-perm (Ua/Ub), H-perm, Z-perm, or a solved-edges skip. That's 4 algs plus the skip, all of them short, 2-gen (R and U only), and among the fastest algorithms in all of cubing.

This is why COLL + EPLL beats OLL + PLL on those 1-in-8 solves: a full PLL can be a 14-move G-perm with awkward regrips, while the worst EPLL is a 12-move U-perm you can execute blindfolded. Your last-layer variance collapses — no more slow PLLs ruining good solves.

COLL as ZBLL Stepping Stone

COLL is also the natural on-ramp to ZBLL — the 493-algorithm set that solves the entire last layer in one look. ZBLL is essentially 'COLL plus edge permutation': every ZBLL case is a COLL corner state combined with an edge cycle. Learn COLL first and you've already internalized the corner half of ZBLL, including its recognition system.

Solvers who learn ZBLL after COLL consistently report it feels ~3× easier than starting from scratch, because the hard part — instant corner recognition across 40+ states — is already done. Even if you never learn full ZBLL, COLL plus a habit of influencing edge permutation during F2L captures a surprising share of ZBLL's benefit for a fraction of the work.

Practice Approach

Learn COLL one shape at a time: drill the algs for a shape until they're muscle memory, then do slow solves where you force COLL whenever edges are oriented — even if recognition is slow at first. A COLL trainer (many free ones exist online) is the fastest way to build the shape→perm recognition reflex.

Integrate gradually: start by using COLL only on the H and Pi shapes in timed solves, expanding to more shapes as each becomes automatic. Expect 6–8 weeks for the full set at a relaxed pace — and remember, every shape you finish pays off immediately in those 1-in-8 solves.

COLL 是 Corners of Last Layer(顶层角块)的缩写。

COLL vs OLL+PLL

在这 1/8 的对局里,你用 COLL + EPLL(两步,但第二步永远是又短又快的纯棱 perm)代替 OLL + PLL(两步,经常是 20 多步的完整 PLL)。

COLL vs CMLL

COLL 是 Corners of Last Layer(頂層角塊)的縮寫。

COLL vs OLL+PLL

在這 1/8 的對局裡,你用 COLL + EPLL(兩步,但第二步永遠是又短又快的純棱 perm)代替 OLL + PLL(兩步,經常是 20 多步的完整 PLL)。

COLL vs CMLL

COLL は Corners of Last Layer(ラスト層コーナー)の略。

COLL vs OLL+PLL

その 1/8 では、OLL+PLL(2 ルック、フル PLL で 20 手超も多い)を COLL+EPLL(2 ルックだが 2 手目は短く速いエッジのみの perm)に置き換える。

COLL vs CMLL

COLL は ZBLL(ラスト層全体を一気に解く 493 手順体系)への自然な登竜門でもある。

COLL-Tutorial

Was ist COLL

COLL steht für Corners of Last Layer.

Was bringt's?

COLL signifie Corners of Last Layer.

COLL sta per Corners of Last Layer.
