FTO Beginner Tutorial
Learn the Face-Turning Octahedron — from what the pieces do, to your first full solve with the Bencisco method.
What Is the FTO
The Face-Turning Octahedron has 8 triangular faces, and you turn the faces themselves (unlike the Pyraminx, which turns corners). The big difference from a 3×3: all three piece types move — there is no fixed center piece. Every face is built from scratch.
The Two Orbits — The Key Insight
The 8 colors split into two groups of 4 that never mix: Orbit 1: White, Green, Gray, Orange. Orbit 2: Yellow, Red, Blue, Purple. Because of this, edges never flip, and corners only have 2 orientations (not 4). When hunting for a piece, you only need to check 4 faces, not 8 — this halves the search and is what makes FTO learnable.
Notation and Hold
Faces are named U D L R F B BL BR (Up, Down, Left, Right, Front, Back, Back-Left, Back-Right). A letter alone is a clockwise turn of that face; with ' it's counter-clockwise. Basic hold: white face pointing left — most of the solve happens from this position, with U done as finger triggers.
Step 1: 1st Center (White) — How To
A center = large trapezoid (1 triangle + 2 edges) + small trapezoid (1 edge + 2 triangles). Build the large one first. Find a white triangle, then attach two white edges to its sides — just move pieces onto the U face and pair them intuitively.
Then the small trapezoid: find the remaining white edge and its two triangles, join them the same way. Color anchor: white is surrounded counter-clockwise by Red → Blue → Purple (Red-Blue adjacency matches a 3×3). If a piece looks wrong, check the orbit — white pieces only ever touch Red, Blue, Purple, Green, Gray, Orange faces.
Step 2: F2T — How To
Build 2 triples around white corners, leaving one slot open (like Yau cross edges). A triple = 1 corner + 2 matching triangles + the edge between them.
Hold white left. Allowed moves only: U / U', R / R', r / r', Rv rotations — anything else breaks the white center. Hunt a white corner, then pull its two triangles next to it with U moves. Don't aim for speed; aim for not breaking white. Drill this step alone 10 times.
Steps 3–4: 2nd Center + L2C — How To
2nd Center (green): same as white — large trapezoid first, then small. Green's neighbors counter-clockwise: Yellow → Red → Purple. When done, AUF so the yellow edge faces right.
L2C: rotate so orange is U (gray becomes F). Solve just one of them — orange or gray, your choice; the other completes automatically. Build its large trapezoid, weaving U / U' between your moves to protect the green center. AUF both faces when finished.
Step 5: LBT — How To
Fill the white triple slot left open in F2T. Switch your hold to yellow as U now. The mechanic: the first turn of Sledgehammer/Hedgeslammer flips two triples at once. Flip, then U / U' to bring the white corner next to its matching triangles, flip again — repeat until the triple is built.
Insertion: 2 patterns — white sticker facing up vs. facing side. Line up the empty slot with D / D', drop the triple in, then ADF (adjust D) to realign.
Step 6: L3T — How To
The final boss. Keep yellow as U. Work only with Sledgehammer, Hedgeslammer and U / U'.
1. Reach the standard state: look at U — if the top isn't all yellow, repeat H = R B' R' B until it is (yellow on top, side triangles mismatched is fine).
2. Even or Odd? (next section) — pick the right trigger variant and solve the yellow face.
3. Clean up: check corners; if permuted wrong, use a CP alg. Odd cases always leave a side-triangle 2-swap — fix with the 2-swap alg. Done!
Two Triggers to Memorize
Sledgehammer: R' F R F' and Hedgeslammer: F R' F' R — the same two triggers from 3×3 F2L. On the FTO they flip triples in the LBT and L3T steps. If you already know them from 3×3, you have a head start; if not, drill them until they're muscle memory — they appear in almost every FTO solve.
Parity: Even vs Odd — How to Tell and Fix
In L3T you'll meet two cases. Even: the standard triggers solve it directly. Odd: needs one extra setup move first.
How to tell: look at the last triple on U. If the pieces cycle cleanly into place, it's Even. If one corner looks 'twisted' out of the cycle — its side color doesn't match the neighboring triangle — it's Odd.
Odd fix: 3 sub-patterns based on the flipped corner's side color vs. the adjacent triangle. Use the matching Sledgehammer/Hedgeslammer variant to solve the yellow face. Odd always leaves a side-triangle 2-swap after yellow — fix with the 2-swap alg, then CP alg for corners if needed.
Beginner advice: learn Even first. Add Odd once Even feels automatic.

Hardware Setup & Maintenance Tips
FTO has many small pieces — keep tensions medium-tight so nothing pops during triggers. A drop of medium-weight lube on the core tracks keeps the 8 faces turning evenly; avoid heavy lube on the outer faces or they'll feel gummy. Wipe the face surfaces clean every few weeks — dust buildup is the #1 cause of a 'slow' FTO.
Practice Tips
FTO feels alien for the first 20 solves — that's normal, the piece movement is unlike anything on a 3×3. Stick to the basic hold (white left) until the triggers feel natural. Scramble and re-solve the first center 10 times before moving on; it teaches you how pieces travel, which pays off in every later step. Once you can finish a solve, work on recognizing the two orbits on sight — that's the skill that turns FTO from 'random scrambling' into real speedsolving.
8 个面记作 U D L R F B BL BR(上、下、左、右、前、后、后左、后右)。
手法原理:Sledgehammer/Hedgeslammer 的第一转会同时翻两个 triple。
Trigger
DaYan FTO M Ball-Core——

面は U D L R F B BL BR(上、下、左、右、前、後、後左、後右)と表記。
仕組み:Sledgehammer/Hedgeslammer の1手目で2つの triple が同時に反転。
2. Even / Odd
DaYan FTO M Ball-Core——
FTO-Anfänger-Tutorial
Flächen heißen U D L R F B BL BR (Up, Down, Links, Rechts, Vorne, Hinten, Hinten-Links, Hinten-Rechts).
Schritt 1: Weißer Center — so geht's
Schritt 2: F2T — so geht's
Schritt 3–4: Grüner Center + L2C — so geht's
Danach beide AUF.
Schritt 5: LBT — so geht's
Einsetzen: 2 Muster — weißer Sticker oben vs. seitlich. Slot mit D / D' ausrichten, Triple einsetzen, dann ADF.
Schritt 6: L3T — so geht's
Das Finale. Gelb als U behalten, nur Sledgehammer, Hedgeslammer und U / U'.
1. Standardzustand erreichen: U prüfen — wenn oben nicht alles gelb, H = R B' R' B wiederholen bis doch (oben gelb, seitlich versetzte Dreiecke ok).
2. Even oder Odd? (nächster Abschnitt) — passende Trigger-Variante wählen, gelbe Fläche lösen.
3. Aufräumen: Ecken prüfen, ggf. CP-Alg.
Parität: Even vs. Odd — erkennen und beheben
In L3T triffst du zwei Fälle. Even: Standard-Trigger lösen direkt.
Anfängertipp: erst Even, Odd dazu wenn Even sitzt.
Empfohlene FTO-Speedcubes
DaYan FTO M Ball-Core — aktuell die Top-Wahl: magnetisch + Ball-Core, stabiles Drehen, der Cube der Top-Solver.
DianSheng FTO Neo (Magnetisch + Ball-Core) — die günstige Alternative, ebenfalls magnetisch mit Ball-Core, top Preis-Leistung für Anfänger.
Tipp: Code CUBINGPRO für 5% Rabatt bei TheCubicle & SpeedCubeShop.
Setup- & Wartungstipps
2. Even ou Odd ? (section suivante) — choisis la bonne variante, résous la face jaune.
Parité : Even vs Odd — reconnaître et corriger
En L3T tu rencontres deux cas. Even : les triggers standards suffisent.
Conseil débutant : d'abord Even, Odd quand Even est automatique.
Passo 1: Centro bianco — come fare
Un centro = trapezio grande (1 triangolo + 2 spigoli) + trapezio piccolo (1 spigolo + 2 triangoli). Prima quello grande.
Passo 2: F2T — come fare
2 triple intorno agli angoli bianchi, uno slot libero (come gli spigoli cross nello Yau). Una tripla = 1 angolo + 2 triangoli abbinati + lo spigolo in mezzo.
Bianco a sinistra. 10 volte.
Passi 3–4: Centro verde + L2C — come fare
2nd Center (verde): come il bianco — prima trapezio grande, poi piccolo. Vicini del verde in senso antiorario: Giallo → Rosso → Viola. Poi AUF, spigolo giallo a destra.
L2C: arancione come U (grigio diventa F).
Passo 5: LBT — come fare
Passo 6: L3T — come fare
Il boss finale. Giallo come U, solo Sledgehammer, Hedgeslammer e U / U'.
2. Even o Odd? (sezione seguente) — scegli la variante giusta, risolvi la faccia gialla.
Parità: Even vs Odd — riconoscere e correggere
In L3T incontri due casi. Even: bastano i trigger standard.
Consiglio principiante: prima Even, Odd quando Even è automatico.
