EOLR the Minimalist Way

Combine edge orientation and UL/UR placement with one pattern — learn the MUM line deeply instead of sixty cases shallowly.

What Is EOLR

EOLR stands for Edge Orientation Left and Right. It merges Roux LSE steps 4a (orient the 6 remaining edges) and 4b (place the UL/UR edges) into one step. Instead of orienting edges first and placing UL/UR after, you orient in a clever way that drops UL/UR onto the bottom (D layer) at the same time — then a single M2 inserts them. The full system has about 60 cases, but this guide takes the minimalist path: learn one pattern deeply instead of sixty shallowly.

The MUM Trigger

M' U M (and its mirror M U M') is the shortest EO trigger — just 3 moves. It solves the most common EO shape directly. Drill both directions until they're pure muscle memory, without looking. Every EOLR solution in this guide is built on this one trigger. If you can fire off MUM without thinking, you're already 80% done.

The One EOLR Pattern

Here's the whole trick: when the EO shape matches the MUM trigger, you execute MUM from an angle that also drops UL/UR to the bottom. That's it — that's the entire EOLR you need. One EO shape, one trigger, one result: oriented edges + UL/UR on D. Don't memorize sixty cases; master this one interaction until it's automatic.

Setting Up Into MUM

For any other EO shape, use 1–2 setup moves — usually just U, U', or U2 — to convert it into the MUM shape first. The only recognition skill you need is one question: 'how many U moves away from MUM is this?' With practice this becomes instant — you see the EO pattern and your fingers already know the AUF. This setup step is the 'control' that makes one-pattern EOLR work for every case.

Finding UL/UR by Elimination

After EO, only UL and UR are still unsolved — and they're the only two edges showing side colors (everything else shows U/D colors on top). Scan the M-slice and U layer: the two edges that 'look wrong' are UL/UR. No tracking during CMLL, no memorizing positions — just spot the odd ones out. This elimination trick makes UL/UR recognition trivial even at full speed.

When to Fall Back to 2-Step

If you can't see the MUM setup within about one second, don't force it — just do standard EO (4a) first, then UL/UR (4b), as two separate steps. EOLR saves 2–4 moves but costs thinking time; in a real solve, a fast 2-step beats a slow EOLR every time. There's no shame in the fallback — even top solvers 2-step the awkward cases. Use EOLR when it's obvious, 2-step when it's not.

Practice Approach

Step 1: drill M' U M and M U M' 50 times each until automatic. Step 2: use an EOLR trainer and practice only the 'setup into MUM' recognition — no solving, just the AUF decision. Step 3: do slow full solves, using one-pattern EOLR whenever you spot it, 2-step otherwise. Step 4: once setup recognition is instant, bring it into timed solves. Expect 2–3 weeks before it feels natural — that's normal for any LSE upgrade.

MUM Family: The Complete Map

The MUM family is every EOLR case built on the M' U M / M U M' trigger. At its heart is the arrow EO shape — 3 bad edges forming an arrowhead pointing at the bad D-layer edge. The arrow has 4 rotations, so the full family is: no setup, U, U', or U2 before the trigger — times 2 for the mirror. That's 8 variants, but don't memorize a list: it's one shape seen from 4 angles, done from 2 sides. Learn the trigger cold, then practice spotting which rotation you're looking at.

Which MUM? Reading the Arrow

Look at the two bad edges on the U layer and the one bad edge on D — they form the arrowhead. The arrowhead points at the D-layer bad edge (DF or DB). If that edge sits at DF with no turn needed, fire M' U M directly. If the arrow is rotated, do the U / U' / U2 that brings the bad D edge to DF first — then the same trigger. For the mirror: when the two U-layer bad edges lean the other way, use M U M' instead. After a week of trainer reps, you won't think in words anymore — you'll just see the arrow and your hands move.

Single-M Cases: EO Already Solved

Sometimes you get lucky: 0 bad edges — EO is already done when you arrive at LSE. These are the easiest EOLR cases in existence because there is nothing to orient. All that remains is placing UL/UR, using only M, M', or M2 (plus a U setup if needed). No trigger to remember, no arrow to read — just look at where UL/UR sit, and move the M-slice to put them on D. Then M2 finishes the job. If MUM is the 3-move EO you drill, single-M is the 1-move EO you get for free.

Single M + U Setup: The Concrete Patterns

UL/UR can sit at four M-adjacent spots: UF, UB, DF, DB. The rule is mechanical: U-turn until UL/UR line up so one M-family move drops them to D. Opposite pair (UF+UB or DF+DB)? One M2 handles it. Adjacent pair on the same side? A single M or M' slides them down. Split across layers (one up, one down)? U to stack them first, then the M move. Drill this as pure recognition: see the two spots → know the U → fire the M. Ten minutes with a trainer and these become faster than your MUM cases.

Beyond MUM: Growing Into Full EOLR

MUM covers the arrow family (3 bad edges) — the most common EO shape. What remains: the 2-edge cases and 4-edge cases, each with their own short trigger that plays the same role MUM plays for arrows. The 6-bad-edge case is rare enough to 2-look. Learning path: MUM line solid → add the 2-edge triggers → add the 4-edge triggers → full ~60. Good news: the MUM foundation makes the rest 3× faster to learn — you already understand 'orient cleverly + drop UL/UR', so each new trigger is just a new shape for an old idea.

Edge Orientation Left and Right 的缩写。它把 Roux LSE 的 4a(给 6 条棱翻色)和 4b(归位 UL/UR 两条棱)合成一步。

排除法找 UL/UR

剩下的只是放 UL/UR,只用 M、M' 或 M2(需要的话加个 U setup)。

Edge Orientation Left and Right 的縮寫。它把 Roux LSE 的 4a(給 6 條棱翻色)和 4b(歸位 UL/UR 兩條棱)合成一步。

排除法找 UL/UR

剩下的只是放 UL/UR,只用 M、M' 或 M2(需要的話加個 U setup)。

Edge Orientation Left and Right の略。Roux LSE のステップ 4a(残り6エッジの向き合わせ)と 4b(UL/UR 配置)を1ステップに統合する。

EOLR minimalistisch

Was ist EOLR

EOLR steht für Edge Orientation Left and Right.

In MUM aufbauen

EOLR signifie Edge Orientation Left and Right.

EOLR sta per Edge Orientation Left and Right.

Se riesci a eseguire MUM senza pensare, sei già all'80%.

Passo 1: 50 ripetizioni di M' U M e M U M' ciascuno fino all'automatismo.

Casi a M singolo: EO già risolta

A volte sei fortunato: 0 spigoli sbagliati — l'EO è già risolta all'arrivo all'LSE.

UL/UR possono stare solo in quattro posizioni vicino a M: UF, UB, DF, DB.

Oltre MUM: verso l'EOLR completo

Percorso: linea MUM solida → aggiungi i trigger a 2 spigoli → aggiungi i trigger a 4 spigoli → ~60 completi.
